We are a Sili Family

Are your kids silikids? My daughter sure is now! I found a line of silicone and glass tableware products for kids...and I'll tell you, it's pretty amazing! Aside from being fun, colorful and super easy to clean (dishwasher safe,) it's SAFE for kids. A recent study by the Seattle Children's Research Institute has reported that infants eating a typical diet consume unsafe levels of phthalates, man-made chemicals used in plastics that can interfere with growth and brain development.

So what's the big deal about silicone, you ask? It’s non-toxic, hypo-allergenic and does not promote bacteria or fungus growth. Silicone DOES NOT contain toxic chemicals like bisphenol-A, lead, PVC and phthalates.

Hooray! We can now feed our kids healthy food and not fear for their lives. I know...as parents, we're just SO demanding!

On another note, silicone is recyclable - although probably not through your city-wide recycling program. But there are many specialty recycling facilities that recycle silicone and you can send your products back to Silikids and they will recycle them for you! It's a company that not only cares about the well being of your child but also the planet? SOLD.

I recently tried a few of their products...let me tell you about what I really think.

Silispoons:

Kid sized spoons with a textured, bumpy handle make it super easy to hold. Its very flexible and perfect for self-feeding beginners. It's more of a mini-shovel than a spoon, really. This makes it very easy for little ones to *actually* get food on the spoon (and keep it there.) When my daughter was just learning to feed herself, she was so excited and wanted to do EVERYTHING "by myself!" but would get so frustrated when she couldn't scoop any food onto her spoon and when she did, it would fall right off. Problem solved. Now that she's 2.5 and feeding herself 100% of time (she's a "by myself" pro now,) the spoons bends to the bowl she's eating out of, which works really well for oatmeal, mashed potatoes and other soft foods.

Siliskin straw tops:

Oh. Em. Gee...how on EARTH did we live without this??? This product is pure genius! It's small, easy to clean and a life saver for a family with a "by myself!" toddler. She's a big girl (don't you know?) and wants to hold her cup on her own and no, not the baby cups, big girl cups and "by myself!" The results of her new-found independence? Juice, milk, water ALL. OVER. MY. FLOOR. And couch. And bed, pillows, car, etc. Then came straw tops and I reveled in her independence. We don't have spills everywhere and I no longer run after her with towels while she runs and giggles around the house (cue crazy mama chasing toddler and slipping in the puddles.)

Siliskin glass cups:

Gone are the days of bottles and sippy cups, Hallelujah! I don't miss them. Not. One. Bit. I do not miss the 18 tiny pieces to clean with specialized tools to get in the crevices, the boiling & sterilizing and the inevitable moment when you have 7 pieces, but are missing that one piece that makes the whole thing work. Buh-Bye, good riddance, don't let the door hit you on the way out! Time for cups. Real, big-girl cups. One piece to clean. ONE...and that makes for ONE happy mama! Until, of course, your big girl is eating her stir fry veggies with her fingers, picks up said glass and it slips through her greasy little fingers (well, it is bigger than her little hands) and it shatters all over the floor. There's glass everywhere and after vacuuming, sweeping and wiping down the floor, I'm convinced there is still glass somewhere on the floor. It will haunt me for days. Enter the Sili Glass Cup. It's tiny and fits perfectly in tiny hands. It's dishwasher safe. It's got a thick, silicone sleeve with grooves and bumps that little (and even greasy) hands can easily grip, and it doesn't break if they drop it. Or throw it...yea, don't judge, we all have our days.

Silimap:

Kids are messy. Really, really messy. Those greasy little fingers touch everything. There's a two foot radius of food and spills around kids as they eat. As every mom knows, there is constant cleaning going on. But what's more, everything touches them too. Now, I don't consider myself a germaphobe, but when I see nastiness, it makes my stomach turn. While I know my kitchen table is clean, I'm not quite sure about the tables at the restaurants we dine at. Well, actually...I am pretty sure about them. They are gross. I can't tell you how many times I've seen buss boys using a wet, dirty rag to wipe down a table. And I'm not just referring to cheap, fast food chains that employee minimum wage earning teenagers who don't care about cleanliness, I'm talking about all restaurants, even healthy/organic/vegan/earth-conscious places. Out comes the Silimap. It's large enough to cover the entire area where she can reach yet has presectioned panels that make the whole thing fold flat. It takes up about as much room as a check book, can be drawn on and is dishwasher safe.

Being a working mom, I don't have time to hand wash, sterilize and vacuum all day. You probably don't either. Do yourself a favor and swap the plastic for glass and silicone. It's the best thing you can do for your kids (and your sanity!)

Check out how to *WIN* some Silikids!
